Etta May Allen (July 9, 1925 - August 20, 2001)

In honor of the memory of their mother, Etta May Allen, and to keep her legacy alive, her children have established the ETTA MAY ALLEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP to help students from our community in western St. Mary, Jamaica pursue their educational dreams.

Like many parents from that colonial, post-independent era, she was a visionary who sought a better future for her children than she had herself. Along with her husband Kenneth Allen, she worked tirelessly to ensure that all their eight children receive a solid foundation through a good education and morally sound upbringing.

Miss Etta, as she was affectionately known, was a devoted wife and mother who embraced the enormous task of single-handedly raising her five boys and three girls after her husband died in 1960. She had a penchant for business and was always thinking of ways to provide and care for her family. What she lacked in material and financial resources, she made up for in character, determination, discipline, resourcefulness, love and an enduring faith in God.

Etta Allen was a community leader, builder and encourager. She was not one to complain about problems but certainly one to do something about problems. She was instrumental in helping many young men and women in the community get a head start through the U.S. Farm Workers Programme. She was further enabled to serve her community when she was appointed a Justice of the Peace.

The measure of a great man or woman is not what they owned but what they leave behind and the lives they shaped and influenced for good. Etta May Allen has left a lasting legacy to her community and to the world.
